HOW DO I KNOW THIS IS SAFE FOR MY HORSE?
Our patented technology was originally developed for the human market, and the FDA allows us to market this device for the treatment of depression, anxiety, insomnia and stress. It has been on the market since 1991 and has been proven safe and effective for humans. Practitioners have used this device safely with children as young as five years of age, and in adults up to the age of ninety-five.
HOW DOES THIS DEVICE DIFFER FROM THE HUMAN DEVICE PRODUCED BY YOUR COMPANY?
The only difference between this device and our human device is that the equine version is set to a maximum setting of 2 milliamps, versus 4 in the human version. This difference exists because a horse's neuron's are larger than that of humans, and are more easily stimulated, therefore a milder dosage is more suitable.
HOW DOES THIS COMPARE WITH OTHER FORMS OF ELECTROTHERAPY, ESPECIALLY ECT?
CES (Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation) is not to be confused with ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy). CES uses a microcurrent of 1-2 milliamps, which is 1/1000 the strength of ECT. ECT requires anaesthesia and the participation of a physician. While it is currently once more in vogue for treating depression, it is not to be compared with our technology, which is mild and non-invasive and may be administered by any responsible horse handler.
HOW LONG IS THE TREATMENT PERIOD?
The treatment period lasts twenty minutes. A groom or experienced handler should observe the horse for the first two to three applications, to make sure the horse is comfortable. After that, the device may be clipped to the halter, and the groom can do other chores, as long as the horse is either stalled or in cross ties.
WHAT CHANGES WILL I SEE IN THE BEHAVIOR OF A HORSE DURING THE TWENTY MINUTE TREATMENT?
Our video of Judith Shoemaker, DVM, applying a treatment to a quarter horse at her farm (www.judithshoemaker.com) in Nottingham, Pennsylvania demonstrates the process of using the device.Every horse is different, but in general most horses after five to ten minutes of the twenty minute treatment will relax and start to lower their heads and close their eyes halfway. These signs occur in most, but not all horses.
After ten to fifteen minutes, many horses will start to move their jaws in a circular chewing motion, and will occasionally shuffle their feet in a relaxed manner. Both of these are positive reactions, and it is our understanding through experience that this indicates a lowering of cortisol and an increase in the production of dopamine and serotonin.
HOW LONG SHOULD I TREAT MY HORSE WITH THE HAPPY HALTER?
We recommend that you treat your horse daily for at least two weeks to one month, until their mood or behavior stabilizes. This is particularly effective with show and race horses with high levels of anxiety, or horses that are trailered and trained heavily during the season. After one month, one can ease off to using the device two or three times a week, for the next month, and after that one may use it periodically as needed.
IF I SKIP A TREATMENT DURING THE WEEK, WILL THIS HAVE A NEGATIVE EFFECT?
Not at all. The effects of the device are cumulative, and unlike many drugs, the device does not have to be used daily, though it is recommended for the first month.
